What does GSM mean? A guide to heavyweight hoodies

If you've been looking for a good quality hoodie, you've probably come across the term GSM. But what does GSM actually mean and does a higher number automatically mean a better hoodie?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It's a measurement of fabric weight and is one of the most useful ways of comparing sweatshirts, hoodies and T-shirts.

Put simply, the higher the GSM, the heavier the fabric is likely to feel.

What GSM is a heavyweight hoodie?

There isn't one universal definition of a heavyweight hoodie, but as a general guide:

  • Lightweight: around 200–280 GSM

  • Midweight: around 280–350 GSM

  • Heavyweight: around 350–450 GSM

  • Very heavyweight: 450 GSM and above

Fabric weight isn't the only sign of quality, but it can tell you a lot about how substantial a garment will feel.

A 400 GSM heavyweight hoodie, for example, will usually feel noticeably denser and more structured than a standard lightweight sweatshirt.

If that substantial feel is what you're looking for, explore our heavyweight hoodies.  Chosen for warmth, structure and everyday outdoor wear.

Heavyweight Hoodies collection

Why choose a heavyweight hoodie?

For us, heavyweight clothing makes sense for the way we actually live.

British weather rarely fits neatly into one season. A sunny morning can become a cold afternoon, while evenings outdoors can remain chilly even after a warm day.

A substantial hoodie works particularly well for walking, camping, campervan trips, coastal days and evenings around the fire.

Our Campfire & Cosy Hoodie was chosen with exactly these sorts of days in mind – a substantial layer for pulling on when the temperature drops and staying outside is still preferable to heading indoors.

Does higher GSM mean better quality?

Not necessarily.

GSM tells you how much the fabric weighs, rather than giving you a complete measure of quality.

A good heavyweight hoodie should also be judged on its:

  • fibre composition

  • construction

  • stitching

  • cuffs and hems

  • shape and fit

  • softness

  • durability

  • finishing

A poorly constructed 500 GSM hoodie isn't automatically better than a beautifully made 400 GSM garment.

That's why we look at the whole garment rather than simply chasing the biggest GSM number.

Heavyweight cotton hoodies

Cotton content can make a considerable difference to the feel of a hoodie.

A heavy cotton hoodie tends to have a substantial, natural feel and often develops character with wear.

Blended fabrics can also have advantages. Carefully chosen recycled fibres can improve durability, shape retention or practicality while still giving the garment the reassuring weight we want from heavyweight clothing.

The same principle applies to warmer-weather layers. A heavyweight T-shirt gives you more structure and substance than a conventional lightweight tee while remaining easy to wear on its own or underneath heavier layers.

Heavyweight doesn't have to mean bulky

One misconception about heavyweight clothing is that it has to feel oversized or cumbersome.

It doesn't.

Good heavyweight fabric can provide structure without excessive bulk.

That makes it particularly useful for layering. Wear a heavyweight hoodie over a T-shirt on milder days or underneath a canvas jacket when temperatures fall.

For colder days, pairing a heavyweight hoodie with something like The Woodsman Canvas Jacket creates a practical combination of warm sweat fabric and a substantial cotton canvas outer layer.

Are heavyweight hoodies warmer?

Generally, a denser fabric provides more insulation than a very lightweight equivalent, although warmth also depends on the construction, fibres and fit.

The benefit of heavyweight sweat fabric is that it creates a substantial layer between you and the weather.

For British autumns, cool spring days and winter layering, that versatility is particularly useful.

Heavyweight clothing beyond hoodies

Fabric weight matters beyond sweatshirts too.

Substantial T-shirts, overshirts, knitwear and canvas jackets and workwear-inspired layers can all bring additional structure and durability to an outdoor wardrobe.

Rather than thinking about individual garments in isolation, we prefer to build layers that work together, pieces that can be added or removed as the British weather changes.

Want to understand heavyweight hoodies in more detail?

GSM is a useful starting point, but fabric weight is only part of the story. Construction, fibre content, fit and intended use all matter too.

A better approach to buying clothes

We'd rather own clothing that gets worn repeatedly than a wardrobe full of pieces that rarely leave the hanger.

Heavyweight garments fit naturally into that approach.

They're practical, comfortable and designed for repeat wear – whether you're walking through woodland, standing beside a campfire, heading to the coast or simply getting outside on a cold morning.

At Wild Isle Outfitters, heavyweight clothing forms part of a wider collection inspired by nature, the British landscape and life outdoors.

Because sometimes the best clothes aren't the ones saved for special occasions.

They're the ones you keep reaching for.
